Sweetheart Songbirds

This Valentine’s Day, your little princess can serenade her valentine with a sweet songbird made of paper hearts.

Time: 15 minutes
What You'll Need
Scissors
Scrapbook paper
Glue stick or glue dots
Ruler
Jeweler's wire or thin craft wire (flexible enough to bend without pliers)
Googly eyes
Colored pencils and/or glitter glue (optional)
How To Make It
  • 1

Print out the template and use the pieces to cut out a head and a body heart from the same color of paper. Then cut the wings and tail feather hearts out of complimentary shades of the same color (or from different colors). Encourage your kids to choose printed patterns or textured papers, if they like. Lastly, cut out a pink or red beak heart.

  • 2

For the bird's legs, twist together three 7-inch lengths of jeweler's wire or craft wire, as shown.

  • 3

Then bend the twisted wires into a V-shape. Next, form feet by bending the very ends of the legs and spreading the individual wires to form three toes.

  • 4

Glue the head and the legs atop the wings heart, as shown.

  • 5

Glue the body heart on top of the wings heart, sandwiching the upper legs between them. Then glue on the beak heart and a pair of googly eyes.

  • 6

Turn the songbird face down and glue the tip of the tail feather heart to the middle of the wings heart. Flip the bird over again and let your child decorate it with colored pencils and/or glitter glue, if she likes.

  • 7

Now stand the bird up. The feet and tail should form a triangular base that keeps it from falling over. If the bird does topple, try spreading the legs a little farther apart.

Notes
Cutting should be done by an adult.
