Vanellope’s Peppermint Barrettes

With her quick wit and sharp tongue, Vanellope can come off a little hard-shelled, so to speak. But don’t let first impressions fool you. Deep down, she’s every bit as sweet as her colorful, candy-coated ’do.

What You'll Need
Wax paper
Package of white polymer clay
Package of red polymer clay
Kitchen knife
Parchment paper covered baking sheet
Mod Podge or similar glue sealer
Small paintbrush
Barrettes
Scraps of sticky-back felt
Tacky glue
How To Make It

    Working on a wax paper-covered surface, slice one quarter from the white polymer clay and roll it into a short log about 2-inches long and 1/2-inch in diameter. Slice another quarter from the white clay and one quarter from the red clay. Cut each lengthwise into eight strips that measure about 1/8 inch wide and 2 inches long.

    Stick the strips to the outside of the white clay log, alternating colors, as shown.

    Gently roll the log between your hands, and/or use your fingertips, to smooth the clay and close the gaps between the outer strips.

    Cut off the rounded ends of the log. Then slice the log into 1/4 to 3/8-inch-thick "peppermints." Use your fingertips to slightly round the edges of each mint.

    Bake the clay candies on a parchment paper-covered baking sheet according to the directions on the package. Once the mints have cooled, seal them with a coat of Mod Podge and then let them dry.

    To attach the finished peppermints to barrettes, first press a small circle or strip of sticky-back felt onto the top of each barrette. Then use tacky glue to stick the peppermints to the felt. Allow the glue to fully cure before wearing the barrette.
