Baked Tortilla Leaves

To explain her people’s beliefs of living in harmony with the Earth, Pocahontas leads John Smith on a walk through the countryside. As they take in the amazing views, beautiful leaves swirl all around them and she tells him “We need to paint with all the colors of the wind.” Cut from flour tortillas and briefly baked in the oven, these crisp, leafy snacks will cause a flurry around the salsa bowl.

What You’ll Need
Leaf-shaped cookie cutter or Leaf Template
2 or 3 flour 8-inch tortillas (each one will yield 3 leaves)
Kitchen scissors
Cookie sheet
Pastry brush
Olive oil
Salt
Salsa
How To Make It
  • 1

Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Meanwhile, use the cookie cutter (or print and cut out the template for a pattern) to cut leaf shapes out of the tortillas. You can stack the tortillas and cut out more than one leaf at a time.

  • 2

Arrange the leaves on a cookie sheet and brush them with olive oil.

  • 3

Bake the leaves until the edges just begin to brown (about 4 minutes). Then remove them from the oven and sprinkle on salt. Serve the leaves with salsa or another favorite dip, or enjoy them plain.
