Have a Scary Good Time with a ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Movie Night

A movie night is my family’s ideal Friday night at home—especially when it’s a Disney•Pixar movie night! Who’s with me?! We also love to throw them for special occasions, and on those nights, it’s fun to take things to the next level with themed crafts and treats that the whole fam will love. Recently, we wanted to create a little Monsters, Inc. viewing party since we just received the film from Disney Movie Club. It’s a favorite for me and my husband—and our toddler Arlo loved it, too!

Monsters, Inc. Hanging Doors Garland

I love making a big impact with oversized decor. It packs the biggest bang for your buck! One of my favorite parts of Monsters, Inc. is the door warehouse. It’s so colorful! You can make your very own with some foam board and a marker.

What You’ll Need

  • Colorful 18 x 24″ foam board
  • Craft knife
  • Black marker
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pink, purple, and yellow cardstock
  • Hot glue
  • Awl (optional)
  • Fishing line

How To Make It

  1. Use a craft knife to cut each foam board in 4.
  2. Use a marker (and ruler, if you want your lines to be extra straight!) to draw the designs.

  3. Get the kids involved and let them decorate their own doors, too! Just make sure you don’t forget Boo’s—that’s the most important one (add paper flowers so you know it’s hers). Use colorful cardstock and hot glue to attach the flowers. Let them dry.
  4. Using an awl or craft knife, poke 2 holes in the top of each door. String fishing line through, then hang them up.

  5. Position them above your couch (we hung them from a curtain rod) or prop them up next to your TV—and you’ll feel like you’re right inside the warehouse!

Sulley Pom-Pom Slippers

Next, you gotta get cozy. That’s movie night rule number one! Pile blankets and pillows onto your couch. Then, add a little monster flair to fuzzy slippers for the whole family, with cute Sulley pom-poms.

What You’ll Need

  • Teal and purple yarn
  • Pom-pom maker
  • Scissors
  • Gray felt
  • Pen or pencil
  • Hot glue
  • Slippers

How To Make It

  1. If you haven’t met a pom-pom maker yet, it’ll become your best friend. Follow the instructions on the packaging (and for more guidance, click here). Wrap turquoise yarn around the tool, adding in a few sections of purple at random to give Sulley his spots!

  2. Next, create horns with gray felt and attach them to the pom-poms with glue. Add the pom-poms to the slippers with hot glue (for a permanent look), or tie them on with string (for a fun temporary fix).

Mike Wazowski Cupcakes

And last, we can’t forget the treats. In addition to your standard popcorn and candy, how about some Mike Wazowski Cupcakes?! These look really impressive, but are actually super simple to make.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages box cake
  • Teal cupcake liners
  • White and black store-bought icing
  • Teal and purple food coloring
  • Pastry bags
  • #55 piping tips
  • Teal and black edible markers
  • Green and white candy melts
  • Green and white taffy candy
  • Craft knife or kitchen scissors

Directions

  1. Make cupcakes according to the package instructions, using teal liners. Let them cool.
  2. Divide the white icing into 2 bowls, and dye 1 with teal food coloring and the other with purple. Add them to piping bags with tips and frost the cupcakes.
  3. Next, make cake balls. After the cake is cooled completely, crumble it into a large bowl. With a large spoon, mix thoroughly with a can of frosting. Roll mixture into 2” cake balls and place them on a wax paper-covered baking sheet.
  4. Make Mike’s eyes by adding teal and black edible markers to white candy melts.
  5. Melt green candy melts in the microwave. When the cake balls are firm, cover them in the melts.

  6. Before they’ve set, add an eye to each cake ball.

  7. Cut horns out of white taffy candy and attach them with another dot of melted candy coating.
  8. Then, make Mike’s arms and legs. Soften a green taffy candy in the microwave for just a few seconds. Use your fingers to roll them into arm and leg shapes. Use a craft knife to cut out little fingers and toes! Then attach them with a dot of melted candy coating.

  9. Finally, draw on a mouth with black icing or the edible marker. Set the Mike cake pops on top of the iced cupcakes, and you have a guaranteed crowd favorite on your menu!

Notes

All baking, cutting, and gluing should be done by an adult.

Set up your treats on trays and bowls around the room so everyone has easy access to their favorite snacks. Now, just slip on those Sulley slippers, kick back, and enjoy the movie with your family!
