Mama Odie’s Masquerade Mask

Modeled after the classic masks masqueraders and carnival goers in New Orleans wear, this disguise is decorated with fantastic feathers cut out of colorful paper. But take a second look and you’ll discover a few clues that give away the identity of the face behind the disguise — a white turban, square shades, and enormous gold earrings. That’s right! It’s none other than Mama Odie, the centuries-old eccentric fairy godmother who lives deep in the bayou with her seeing-eye snake Juju.

Time: 20 minutes

What You’ll Need

  • Scissors
  • Scrapbook paper or cardstock (white, gold or yellow, black, and any other color you like)
  • Craft scissors (optional)
  • Stapler
  • Glue stick
  • Black marker
  • Wooden paint stirrer
  • Glue dots

How To Make It

  1. Print out the template and use it to cut out the turban pieces from white paper, the earrings from gold or yellow paper, and the sunglass lenses from black paper. Cut out a mask base from any color you like (it will be covered when the mask is finished). Then use craft scissors (if you’re using them) to cut out a bunch of paper feathers in both sizes, again using any color you like.
  2. Shape the turban ties into loops and staple them to the top of the turban base, as shown.
  3. Glue the upper turban strip onto the base, sandwiching the stapled portion of the looped ties between them.
  4. Glue the two lower turban strips in place on the base.
  5. Begin gluing paper feathers around the eyeholes of the mask base. Use the larger feathers along the outer edges and the smaller ones in the center of the mask between the eyeholes. Then top the larger feathers with a layer of smaller feathers.
  6. Glue a sunglass lens in place around each eyehole. Then use a marker to draw a line between them.
  7. Glue the tops of the earrings to the back of the mask base so that they extend below the feathers.
  8. Glue the top of the feather-covered mask to the bottom of the turban.
  9. Use glue dots to attach the paint stirrer to one side of the mask to use as a handle.

Cutting should be done by an adult.
