Tink’s Table and Chairs

It only takes a quick peek into a tinker fairy’s home to realize what a knack he or she has for turning ordinary items into useful treasures. And for an exceptionally talented tinker like Tinker Bell, lost things such as jar and bottle lids can be the makings for some snazzy furnishings.

With a little help from you, your child can assemble some household recyclables into a kitchen set that would make Tink proud.

Time: 1 hour

What You’ll Need

  • Pencil
  • Scrapbook paper or other colored paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Jar lid (about 3 1/4 inches in diameter) for a tabletop
  • 2 beverage bottle lids (about 1 1/4 inches in diameter) for stools
  • Ruler
  • Stick or several twigs
  • Clippers
  • Rubber band
  • Hot glue gun
  • 2 bottle corks
  • Thin, flexible floral wire or craft wire
  • Tiny paper flower shapes (you can find them in the scrapbook section of most craft supply stores, or you can cut out your own)
  • Wooden bead

How To Make It

  1. First, create a rug on which to set up the furniture you will make. Print and cut out the template. Then trace the leaf onto green scrapbook paper and cut out the tracing. Use this cutout as a pattern for cutting out a second, slightly larger leaf from a contrasting shade of green scrapbook paper.
  2. Fold the smaller leaf in half vertically and snip long thin notches in the paper to resemble veins.
  3. Glue the smaller leaf atop the larger one, and set your rug aside for now.
  4. Next, place the jar and bottle lids, tops down, on pieces of scrapbook paper and trace around them. Cut out the tracings and glue them to the tops of the respective lids.
  5. Make a stand for the table by cutting the stick or twigs into a half dozen 2 1/2-inch lengths. Arrange them in a bunch and use the rubber band to bind them together 1/2 inch or so from the top. Spread the sticks apart slightly at the bottom of the bunch. Then hot glue the top of the table stand to the bottom of the jar lid.
  6. Create a pair of stools by gluing a bottle lid to the top of each cork.
  7. Arrange the furniture on top of the leaf rug.
  8. Top off the table with a mini bouquet by cutting a few short lengths from a piece of floral wire and poking the top of each one through the center of a tiny paper flower. Insert the flower stems into a wooden bead “vase”.

Cutting and gluing should be done by an adult.
