To infinity and beyond! It only takes a few ingredients to turn an ordinary apple into an extraterrestrial allergy-friendly treat.
Allergy Friendly: Toy Story Alien Apple
- 1 teaspoon coconut butter, softened*
- 2 or 3 drops maple syrup
- 3 or 4 fresh or frozen blueberries
- Granny Smith apple
- Gluten-free, dairy-free chocolate chips or chocolate pearls
- Green grape
- Lemon juice (optional)
- Kitchen knife
- 5/8-inch round fondant cutter
- Vegetable peeler
- Wooden toothpick
Be sure to use coconut butter (which is spreadable when soft) and not coconut oil.
Stir together the softened coconut butter (if needed, microwave it briefly to bring it to a spreadable consistency) and maple syrup in a small bowl.
Cut a thick vertical slice from the face of the apple to create an oval dome-shaped piece (approximately 2 1/4 inches high and 3 inches wide) for the alien’s head. Set the slice peel side up on a plate.
Use the fondant cutter to gently press three circular outlines for the eyes in the apple peel, centering them on the upper third of the alien’s head. Next, use the tip of the vegetable peeler to carefully scoop out the peel along with a shallow layer of the fruit within each circle.
Fill the eyeholes with small dabs of the coconut butter (you should have about 3/4 teaspoon of the butter left) and then press a chocolate chip or chocolate pearl into the center of each.
Use the tip of a knife to etch a long slight smile line centered across the lower third of the head.
For the alien’s antenna, insert one end of a wooden toothpick into the top of the head and push the grape onto the other end.
From the remaining portion of the apple, cut a broad thin slice about 2 1/4 inches wide to use for the neckline. Cut two smaller oval slices (about 1 1/4 inches) for the ears.
Add the blueberries to the remaining coconut butter. Use the back of a spoon to mash and stir the fruit into the coconut butter until the mixture is smooth.
Spread the blueberry-flavored coconut butter on the neck slice and then tuck the slice under the head so that only a thin “collar” shows below the alien’s chin.
Prop the ear slices against the sides of the head with the peel edges facing the face, and serve.
(Tip: If you anticipate a delay between preparation and serving, you can brush the cut surface of the apple slices with diluted lemon juice to keep them from browing.)
