Helpful Tip
For Donald’s hat, you can search for a template online and use cardstock to make the cake topper.
Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
-
Grease and flour three 4″ cake pans
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and baking soda until the baking soda dissolves.
-
Add the egg yolk, vanilla, and melted butter. Whisk to combine.
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
-
Add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture and whisk until thoroughly combined. Stir in sprinkles.
-
Divide the batter between the pans. Place the pans on a cookie sheet and bake for 22-25 minutes.
-
Cool completely before decorating.
-
To create frosting, in a bowl of a stand mixer whip the butter until pale and creamy (about 2 minutes). Then add the powdered sugar and mix on low speed until incorporated. Add the vanilla and mix until incorporated.
-
To Decorate: Divide frosting into two bowls. Add blue food coloring to one of the bowls. Frost cake. I used red candy wafers to make Donald’s bow and yellow candy wafers for his buttons
