Anna & Elsa Cookies

Ingredients

  • Cookie Ingredients:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 Tbsp milk
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • Icing Ingredients:
  • 2 Tbsp meringue powder
  • ½ cup water
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring in: Blue, purple, green, pink, yellow, red, ivory, and black
  • Materials:
  • Gingerbread girl cookie cutter
  • Piping bags
  • Couplers
  • Piping tips

Directions

  1. To prepare the sugar cookies, start by mixing together butter and sugar in a large bowl.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs until yolk and whites are combined. Add to butter and sugar. Add vanilla and milk.

  3. In a separate bowl, combine baking powder and all-purpose flour. Gently fold into the batter. Cover your dough with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 45 minutes before rolling and cutting.

  4. Preheat oven to 375˚F.

  5. Once chilled, roll out your dough between two pieces of parchment paper, and use your gingerbread girl cookie cutter to cut out cookies.

  6. Place cookie cut-outs on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet, and bake for 8 minutes.

  7. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before decorating.

  8. To prepare the icing, combine meringue powder and water until foaming.

  9. Add in powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and mix for about 2 minutes.

  10. Pour half of the icing into a separate bowl, and cover with a wet towel so that it doesn’t harden while you’re not using it. With the remaining icing, add in about ½ more powdered sugar and combine to make it a thicker consistency. (This will be the icing for the outlines of your cookie, and the thinner icing will be for flooding within the lines.)

  11. First, place a couple tablespoons of your thicker icing into a small bowl. Add in equal parts yellow and red food coloring to make Anna’s hair color. Place the icing in a piping bag with a small piping tip to do the outline of Anna’s hair on half your cookies. Do the same with your thinner icing, using a tip with a larger opening to “flood” in the outlines of her hair.

  12. Then do the same for the other half of your cookies, which will be your Elsa cookies — but use only yellow food coloring for her blonde hair.

  13. Place a couple tablespoons of thicker icing into a separate bowl, and use a very small amount of your ivory food coloring to create Anna and Elsa’s skin color. Place the icing in a piping bag, and pipe the outline of Anna and Elsa’s faces, as well as their hands. Do the same with your thinner icing to fill in your outlines.

  14. Next, place about 4 Tbsp of thick icing into a bowl, and add a couple drops of green food coloring to create a mint green color. Use it to outline Anna’s nightgown, leaving some space at the bottom for a darker green strip. Use thinner icing dyed the same color to fill it in.

  15. Then place about 4 Tbsp of thick icing into a bowl, adding more green food coloring to create a darker green shade. Use it to outline the stripe at the bottom of Anna’s nightgown, along with her shoes. Use this thicker dark green frosting for the accents on her dress. Use a thinner frosting of the same color to fill in her shoes and the thick stripe at the bottom of her gown.

  16. Take about 4 Tbsp of the thick icing and dye pink to add the pink stripe details and bow on Anna’s dress, and give her rosy cheeks. While you have this pink icing prepared, you can also add in Elsa’s cheeks.

  17. Time to create Elsa’s nightgown! Place about 4 Tbsp of thicker icing into a separate bowl, adding in enough drops of purple food coloring to create a royal purple. Outline the shape of her nightgown and shoes, saving room on the sides for the outline of her cape. Use the thinner icing dyed the same shade of royal purple to flood in the outline of the nightgown and shoes.

  18. Place some of your thick icing in a separate bowl and use a small amount of purple food coloring to create a lavender shade. Use it to outline Elsa’s cape. Then use some of your thinner royal icing dyed the same shade to fill it in.

  19. Next, place thick icing in a bowl and dye it an aqua blue shade, then pipe on the details of Elsa’s nightgown.

  20. Lastly, place thick icing in a bowl, and mix in black food coloring. Pipe on your Anna and Elsa cookies’ eyes and mouthes.

  21. Serve and enjoy!
