What You’ll Need
- Batch of sugar cookie dough (homemade or store-bought)
- Green food coloring
- Disposable food preparation gloves (for kneading food coloring into the dough)
- Plastic wrap
- Rolling pin
- Wax paper
- Small heart cookie or fondant cutter (about 1.5 inches wide)
- Baking sheets
- Cooling rack
- 2/3 cup sifted confectioner’s sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 tablespoon corn syrup
- Small mixing bowl and spoon
- Pastry brush
- Edible gold luster dust (such as Pearl Dust) and a small dry pastry brush for applying it (optional)
- Small white decorating candies, such as sugar pearls and mini flowers (found in the baking aisle of the grocery or craft store)
How To Make It
- Knead green food coloring into the cookie dough. Then flatten the dough into a disk and wrap it tightly in plastic. Chill the dough until firm.
- Heat the oven. Working on a flour-dusted sheet of wax paper, roll out the chilled dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut heart shapes from the dough. Bake the cookies according to the recipe directions and then let them cool completely.
- Meanwhile, make a batch of cookie glaze by stirring together the confectioner’s sugar, milk, and corn syrup in a small mixing bowl. If it’s not fluid enough to spread with a pastry brush, stir in a little more milk.
- Working with one cookie at a time, brush the top with glaze. Then, if you want to add a shimmery effect, dip the tip of a small dry paintbrush in gold luster dust, hold it over the cookie, and tap the paintbrush handle to dust the glaze before it sets up.
- Now use the white decorating candies to adorn the glazed tops with mini flowers and other designs. If the glaze hardens before you finish, use the tip of a toothpick to apply more in the spots you’d like to stick the candies.
